Tags, nested taxonomies, and search
Tags provide lightweight, cross-cutting categorization across documents regardless of their physical folder location. In Oyma, tags support nested taxonomies, auto-completion, and instant filtering via the Command Palette.
Inline tags vs frontmatter tags
Tags can be declared in two ways:
1. Inline in prose
Type a hash symbol (#) followed immediately by alphanumeric characters:
Reviewed the new audio buffer architecture during today's session. #engineering #screencapturekit
2. In YAML frontmatter
Include tags in your note’s frontmatter header (without leading # characters):
---
tags:
- architecture
- performance
- macos
---
Nested tag taxonomies
Hierarchical nested tags group related sub-categories under unified top-level themes:
#client/acme-corp/contract
#client/acme-corp/meeting
#status/blocked/legal
#status/in-review
Benefits of nested tagging
- Broad Filtering: Searching
#client/acme-corpreturns all meetings, contracts, and notes for that client. - Specific Triage: Searching
#status/blockedaggregates all stuck work streams across every project.
Browsing the Tag Pane
Open the Tag Pane in the left sidebar to inspect your vault’s tag distribution:
- Alphabetical or Frequency Sort: Sort tags by name or by the total number of notes referencing them.
- Hierarchical Tree View: Expand and collapse parent tags to explore nested taxonomies visually.
- One-Click Filtering: Clicking any tag runs an instant vault-wide query.

Questions
What syntax creates nested tags?
Use forward slashes: `#work/project/alpha` or `#status/in-progress`.
Can tags be placed in frontmatter?
Yes. Place tags in the `tags:` array in YAML frontmatter without the `#` prefix.
Can I search for all child tags under a parent?
Yes. Searching `#work` automatically matches `#work/project`, `#work/finance`, and all deeper descendants.
