Getting started
Oyma keeps your notes as plain Markdown files in a folder on your Mac. On first launch it creates that folder for you, adds three sample notes, and shows a short welcome so you can start writing straight away.
Your first launch
- Open Oyma. A Welcome dialog lists the shortcuts you’ll use most.
- Two checkboxes ask whether to share anonymous crash data and anonymous usage statistics. Both start off. You can change either later in Settings › Privacy.
- Click Got it to start with the default folder, or Open vault… to pick a folder of your own.
- A three-step tour points out the new-note button, the Filter notes box and the command palette. Click Next to step through it, or Skip tour. It only runs once.
Where your notes live
Oyma calls the folder it works in a vault. A vault is just a folder: nothing is converted, packed into a database or uploaded.
- The default vault is a folder inside your Documents folder. If it’s empty, Oyma adds three sample notes: a welcome note, a Markdown cheat sheet and a page of tips. Delete them whenever you like. They aren’t added again.
- Any other folder works too. Choose File › Open Vault… or press ⌘⇧O. Next time you launch, Oyma reopens the vault you used last.
- Notes you already have open as they are. If the folder is an Obsidian vault, read Open an existing Obsidian vault first.
Oyma keeps a small hidden .app folder inside the vault for its own data, such as folder icons and meeting recordings. Deleted notes go to a hidden .trash folder in the vault rather than disappearing.
The basics
| Action | How |
|---|---|
| New note | ⌘N |
| New folder | ⌘⇧N |
| Rename the current note | F2, or click the title |
| Today’s daily note | ⌘⇧D |
| Notes, commands and tags in one place | ⌘O |
| Search the text of every note | ⌘⇧F |
| New tab / close tab | ⌘T / ⌘W |
| Switch between reading and editing | ⌘E |
| Settings | ⌘, |
A note’s title is its file name. When you change the title, Oyma renames the file and updates links to it in your other notes. Press ↑ on the first line of a note to jump into the title, and Enter to go back to the body.
Daily notes are created in a daily folder, named by date. You can change that pattern under Settings › General › Daily-note location.
Finding your way around
The sidebar has four views at the top: All notes, Today, Pinned and Meetings, followed by your folders. The notes list is grouped by date, and the Filter notes box narrows it by title and preview as you type.
For anything else, press ⌘O. Type part of a note’s name to open it, start with > to run a command, or start with # to look up a tag. Search and the command palette covers all three.
To see every shortcut, open Settings › Shortcuts and click Open cheat sheet.
Settings at a glance
Press ⌘, to open Settings. The tabs are:

Questions
Where are my notes stored?
