Folder organization and the PARA method

updated

A well-structured vault maintains clarity as your knowledge repository scales to thousands of notes. Because Oyma stores documents as plain .md files on your Mac filesystem, your organization remains 100% portable across tools.

The PARA organizational framework

Popularized by Tiago Forte, the PARA framework classifies information by its level of immediate actionability:

my-vault/
├── 1-projects/ # Active initiatives with defined goals and deadlines
├── 2-areas/ # Ongoing responsibilities with standards to maintain
├── 3-resources/ # Topic libraries, technical references, and study notes
└── 4-archives/ # Completed or inactive items preserved for reference

1. Projects

  • Active client deliverables: 1-projects/q4-mobile-app-launch/
  • Current sprint deliverables: 1-projects/security-audit-remediation/

2. Areas

  • Long-term domains: 2-areas/engineering-management/
  • Personal health logs: 2-areas/fitness-and-nutrition/

3. Resources

  • Technical documentation: 3-resources/rust-systems-programming/
  • Meeting templates: 3-resources/meeting-templates/

4. Archives

  • Completed 2025 projects: 4-archives/2025-q3-marketing-rebrand/

Combining folders with Maps of Content (MOCs)

While folders handle file storage, Maps of Content (MOCs) handle conceptual navigation. An MOC is a central Markdown note containing curated links to related notes:

# Systems Architecture MOC

## Core Components
- [[Storage Layer Specifications]]
- [[Audio Loopback Engine]]
- [[Whisper Inference Pipeline]]

## Historical Architectural Decisions
- [[ADR-0001 On-Device SQLite]]
- [[ADR-0002 Local Whisper Models]]

MOCs allow a single note to participate in multiple conceptual hierarchies without duplicating files on disk.

Questions

Should I use deep folders or wikilinks?

We recommend shallow folders (3-4 top-level directories) combined with dense wikilinks to prevent rigid categorization friction.

What is the PARA method?

PARA is an organization system based on actionability: Projects (active), Areas (responsibilities), Resources (topics), and Archives (inactive).

Does folder organization impact search performance?

No. The local SQLite FTS5 search index queries all files instantaneously regardless of folder depth.
