Links, backlinks and the graph

updated

Wikilinks connect your notes: type [[, pick a note, and Oyma keeps track of the link in both directions. The inspector shows what links to the current note, and the graph shows how the whole vault fits together.

  1. Type [[ anywhere in a note. A list of your notes appears.
  2. Keep typing to filter it. Use ↑ and ↓ to choose, then press Enter. Esc closes the list.
  3. The finished link reads [[Note title]] and displays as the title alone.

To open a link, ⌘-click it. You can also right-click a link for Open link, Open link in new tab, Copy link and Remove link.

You can insert an empty link from the right-click menu (Insert › Internal link) or by typing >Internal link in the command palette.

Add a | and the text you want to show:

See [[2026 planning|this year's plan]] for details.

The note shows “this year’s plan” as the link. The target stays 2026 planning.

After the note name, type #. The list switches to the headings in that note:

[[Project brief#Budget]]

Right-clicking a heading in your own note offers Copy section link, which copies a ready-made link to that heading.

Heading links are saved in the file in the same form Obsidian uses, so they work there. In Oyma, ⌘-clicking a link that includes #Heading doesn’t open the note yet. Use the plain [[Note]] form when you want a link you can click through.

A wikilink is matched in this order, ignoring upper and lower case:

  1. A note at that exact path, such as [[work/log]].
  2. A note with that title, wherever it is in the vault.
  3. A note whose file name matches.

If nothing matches, the link stays as written and ⌘-clicking it does nothing. Frontmatter aliases aren’t used for matching. Use the | form above instead.

The inspector pane lists, for the open note:

  • Outline: its headings. Click one to jump to it.
  • Backlinks: every note that links to it.
  • Tags: its tags. Clicking a tag searches the vault for it.
  • Reminders: reminders set on dates in the note.

Open or close the inspector with its toolbar icon, or press ⌘O and run >Toggle inspector. If a note has no headings, links or tags yet, the pane says so in a single line.

When you rename a note, either by editing its title or with F2, Oyma renames the file and then rewrites every [[link]] to it across the vault:

  • Display text after | is preserved.
  • Matching ignores case, the same way links are resolved.
  • Links inside code blocks are left alone, because there they’re example text rather than links.

You can’t rename a note while it’s recording a meeting. Stop the capture first.

The graph

Press ⌘O and run >Open knowledge graph to see every note as a dot and every wikilink as a line between them.

  • Drag the background to pan, and use the scroll wheel to zoom.
  • Hover over a note to highlight it and the notes it’s connected to.
  • Click a note to open it.

Close the graph with its ✕ button.

#tags group notes without linking them directly. Type # in the body to pick from tags you already use. To find every note with a tag, press ⌘O, type # and choose the tag. See Search and the command palette for how that search works.

Questions

What happens to my links when I rename a note?

Oyma rewrites every [[wikilink]] that points to the old name, across the whole vault. Display text after the | is kept exactly as you wrote it.

Do I have to type the folder in a wikilink?

No. [[Note]] finds the note by its title, wherever it sits in the vault, as Obsidian does. You can include a path if two notes share a title.

Where do I see backlinks?

In the inspector pane on the right. Click its icon in the toolbar or run Toggle inspector from the command palette. It lists the outline, backlinks, tags and reminders for the open note.
