Graph view and knowledge visualization

updated

The interactive graph view visualizes the associative network of your thinking. By rendering notes as nodes and bidirectional wikilinks as edges, Oyma reveals emergent topic clusters, cross-project connections, and unlinked orphan notes.

Opening and navigating the graph

  • Global Graph: Click the Graph icon in the left ribbon or press ⌘G.
  • Local Graph: Open the right inspector pane and select the Local Graph tab to explore notes connected to your current active document.
  • Pan: Click and drag anywhere on the canvas background.
  • Zoom: Pinch-to-zoom on your trackpad or scroll with ⌘Scroll.
  • Select Note: Click any node to open the document.
  • Hover Preview: Hover over any node to view a popover card showing the note’s opening lines.

Graph physics and filtering

Customize the force-directed layout in the Graph Settings overlay:

ParameterFunctionRecommended setting
Center ForcePulls all nodes toward the centerModerate
Repel ForcePushes neighboring nodes apart to prevent overlapHigh
Link DistanceSets baseline edge length between connected notes120px
Link StrengthHow rigidly edges pull connected notes togetherDefault

Filtering your view

  • Tags: Filter for #project to isolate active client initiatives.
  • Folders: Exclude templates/ or daily/ to focus purely on conceptual wiki notes.
  • Orphans: Toggle Orphans on or off to inspect notes that have zero incoming or outgoing connections.

Identifying knowledge bottlenecks

The graph view provides practical structural insights:

  • Dense Hubs: Notes with 15+ links represent foundational Map of Content (MOC) indexes.
  • Bridge Notes: A single note connecting two separate clusters indicates valuable interdisciplinary cross-pollination.
  • Isolated Clusters: Tightly connected subgraphs highlight specialized research silos.

Questions

How is the graph rendered?

The graph view is rendered using hardware-accelerated HTML5 Canvas, ensuring 60fps fluid navigation on Apple silicon.

What is the difference between global and local graph?

The global graph shows all notes across your vault. The local graph shows only the active note and its 1-hop or 2-hop neighbor connections.

Can I color nodes by tag or folder?

Yes. The graph control panel lets you assign custom colors based on folder paths or tag taxonomies.
