Summaries and Ask with Ollama or your own key

updated

Oyma doesn’t ship with an AI model. Meeting summaries and Ask use either Ollama, a free app that runs models on your Mac, or your own API key from Anthropic or OpenAI. By default, summaries and Ask run on your Mac through Ollama.

Option 1: Ollama on your Mac

Install Ollama

  1. Download the Mac app from ollama.com and move it to your Applications folder.
  2. Open it. Ollama runs in the background and shows an icon in the menu bar.

The Mac app runs natively on Apple silicon and uses the GPU. If you install Ollama with Homebrew instead, check that you got the Apple silicon build: in Terminal, file "$(which ollama)" should mention arm64. An Intel build runs under Rosetta without GPU acceleration and is much slower.

Pull a model

In Terminal, run:

ollama pull llama3.2

llama3.2 is the model Oyma uses by default. The first pull downloads the model, which takes a few minutes. You only do this once.

Point Oyma at it

  1. Press ⌘,, open the AI tab, and next to Provider & API keys click Configure…. (You can also press ⌘O and run >AI settings.)
  2. In the Ollama (local) row, set Model to the model you pulled. Default (llama3.2) is fine if you followed the step above.
  3. Click Test connection. It should read Connected. The test uses your saved settings, so if you changed the model, click Save first and reopen the dialog.
  4. Click Save.

Back on the AI tab, the Meeting summary & chat row should read On device (no key needed). That row always shows where summaries and Ask actually run.

Ollama listens on your Mac only (127.0.0.1), so it keeps working with Local-only mode turned on.

Option 2: your own Anthropic or OpenAI key

  1. Open AI settings as above.
  2. Select Anthropic (Claude) or OpenAI.
  3. Paste your key into API key. Get one at console.anthropic.com or platform.openai.com.
  4. Optionally choose a Model. Each option shows the provider’s per-token price.
  5. Click Save. The provider row now shows · configured.

Your key is stored in the macOS Keychain and never shown again. To remove it, click Forget key, then Confirm forget.

Then tell Oyma to use the cloud for summaries and Ask:

  1. Open Settings › Privacy and find Per-feature routing.
  2. Set Meeting summary and Ask Oyma to Cloud.

The Best quality preset also does this, but it sends meeting audio to OpenAI for transcription too. Use per-feature routing if you want transcription to stay on your Mac. Every cloud call is listed in the egress log in Settings › Privacy, and you pay your provider directly.

Meeting summaries

When a recording’s transcript is ready, Oyma writes a summary into the note, with key points and action items. If the note still has its default title, it also gives it a short descriptive one.

  • Summarise after transcription (in Settings › Meetings, on by default) controls the automatic summary.
  • Summary shape picks the structure: General meeting, Daily standup, Retrospective, Design review or One-on-one.
  • To summarise again, perhaps with a different shape, open Summary from the waveform button and click Regenerate summary (the circular-arrow button), or run >Re-summarise current meeting (AI) from the command palette. If a note has no summary yet, the button reads Generate summary.

Ask

Ask answers questions about the note you’re in.

  1. Click the waveform button in the bottom-right corner of the note and choose Ask Oyma. If you’ve selected text, the option reads Ask about selection.
  2. Choose what to ask about: Current note, Selection, Transcript, or Note and session.
  3. Type your question and press Enter.

Answers stream in and can be stopped. Under each answer, Copy and Add to note are always there, and Insert at cursor and Replace selection appear when they apply. Nothing changes in your note unless you choose one.

Conversations are saved per note in your vault’s hidden .app folder. Start a fresh one with New chat, or reopen an earlier one from the history menu. Ask works on one note at a time and doesn’t search your whole vault.

Turning AI off for a note

Add ai: false to a note’s frontmatter, and Oyma won’t summarise it, give it an automatic title, answer questions about it, or send its recording for cloud transcription. On-device transcription isn’t affected. See Local-only mode and privacy controls.

If Generate summary or Ask shows an error, see Troubleshooting.

Questions

Does Oyma include an AI model?

No. Summaries and Ask need either Ollama installed on your Mac with a model pulled, or your own Anthropic or OpenAI API key. Recording and transcription work without either.

Which Ollama model does Oyma use?

llama3.2 by default. You can switch to llama3.1, mistral or phi3 in AI settings, as long as you've pulled that model with Ollama first.

Where is my API key stored?

In the macOS Keychain. Oyma never displays the key again after you save it. Use Forget key in AI settings to remove it.

Can Ask search all my notes?

No. Ask works on one note at a time: the note, a selection, its transcript, or the note plus its meeting session.
