Target Note
Custom Display Text
Target Note#Specific HeadingBidirectional linking transformed personal computing from static folder hierarchies into organic networks of connected thought.
Popularized by early wiki software and championed by Obsidian, Roam Research, and Oyma, WikiLinks (WikiLinks) allow you to connect ideas effortlessly without dealing with rigid file paths, URL encodings, or web protocols.
Typing [[ instantly opens an autocompletion overlay, turning note-taking into a fluid stream of networked thinking.
Basic WikiLink syntax
To create a link to another note in your vault, wrap the note title in double square brackets:
We reviewed the Q4 roadmap during our session with Sarah Connor.
Architectural decisions are documented in Local Whisper Pipeline.
In the rendered view:
- The brackets are concealed, displaying a clickable text link.
- Clicking the link instantly opens the target note.
- If the note does not yet exist, clicking the link creates a new note with that title.
No file extensions required
Unlike standard Markdown links ([Architecture](notes/architecture.md)), WikiLinks do not require the .md file extension. The editor resolves note names automatically across all vault folders.
Piped aliases: Display Text
Often, the grammatical flow of a sentence requires different phrasing than the formal title of a note. You can specify a custom display alias using the pipe character (|):
We are implementing on-device transcription on macOS.
The meeting was attended by Sarah and Jordan.
- Target note:
Local Whisper Pipeline - Visible link text:
on-device transcription
Heading and section links: Note#Heading
You can link directly to a specific section inside any note by appending # followed by the heading title:
See our benchmark results in Local Whisper Pipeline#Accuracy Benchmarks.
When you type # inside a WikiLink, Oyma autocompletes all available headings within that target note. Clicking the link scrolls directly to the targeted section.
Block-level linking: Note#^block-id
In Oyma and Obsidian, you can also link to individual paragraphs or bullet points using block identifiers (^):
Refer to the exact constraint outlined in Privacy Architecture#^security-rule.
How WikiLinks power the Backlinks Panel and Graph View
WikiLinks are fundamentally bidirectional. When Note A links to Note B:
- Forward link: Note A contains a direct link navigating to Note B.
- Backlink: Note B automatically records that Note A links to it. The Backlinks panel in Oyma displays all incoming mentions with surrounding context.
- Graph View: Every WikiLink generates an edge between two nodes in Oyma‘s interactive force-directed Graph View, revealing conceptual clusters and emergent relationships across your work.
Automatic link refactoring in Oyma
In traditional file systems, renaming a file breaks all external references pointing to it.
In Oyma:
- When you rename a note, Oyma scans your entire vault and automatically rewrites every
Old TitletoNew Titlein milliseconds. - Heading renames can also update anchor links automatically.
- Your knowledge network remains completely intact and healthy.
WikiLinks in Oyma on macOS
Writing with WikiLinks in Oyma is fast and fluid:

Frequently asked questions
- What is the syntax for a WikiLink in Markdown?
- Enclose the title of the target note inside double square brackets: `Note Title`. You do not need to include the `.md` file extension or full folder path; the editor resolves note locations across your vault automatically.
- How do I create a link with custom display text (piped alias)?
- Add a pipe character (`|`) followed by your custom display text after the target note title: `Display Text`. The link navigates to 'Target Note' while displaying 'Display Text' in the rendered document.
- How do I link directly to a heading inside another note?
- Append a hash symbol (`#`) and the heading text after the note title: `Target Note#Heading Title`. Clicking the link navigates directly to that specific section.
- What happens when I rename a note linked by WikiLinks in Oyma?
- Oyma automatically updates all incoming WikiLinks across every note in your vault to match the new title, preventing broken links and maintaining graph integrity.
