Spreadsheet-like tables

Frictionless table editing without wrestling with plain pipe characters.

Shipped in Mac AppProven in codebase: decorations/table-render.ts, keymap/table-nav.ts, tables/tabular-paste.ts (as of 2026-10-03)

What this helps you achieve

  • Navigate cells effortlessly with Tab, Shift-Tab, and Enter keys
  • Paste spreadsheet data directly from Excel or Numbers into valid Markdown
  • Sort columns alphabetically or numerically with a single click

Working with tabular data has long been one of the most frustrating aspects of writing in plain Markdown. Traditional text editors require you to manually align ASCII pipe characters |, fiddle with hyphenated separator rows |---|---|, and constantly readjust spacing whenever you add a longer word to a cell.

When note-taking tools attempt to solve this problem, they often swing to the opposite extreme: converting your documents into proprietary relational databases or embedding opaque JSON payloads that destroy the plain text portability of your notes.

Oyma delivers the ideal middle ground: spreadsheet-like table interactions rendered directly in place, backed 100% by clean, standard GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) pipe tables on disk.

Seamless spreadsheet keyboard ergonomics

The moment your cursor enters a Markdown table in Oyma, the editor transforms the raw ASCII pipes into a responsive, beautifully styled interactive grid.

You can interact with your data using the muscle memory you have developed across spreadsheets:

  • Effortless cell traversal: Press Tab to advance to the next cell to the right. Press Shift-Tab to move backward to the preceding cell.
  • Instant row generation: When your cursor reaches the final cell of the bottom row, pressing Tab automatically synthesizes a brand-new row, positioning your cursor ready for entry.
  • Vertical navigation: Press Enter or the Down Arrow to drop directly to the cell immediately below your active position.
  • Contextual text formatting: Cells support full inline formatting, including bold, italics, code spans, and wikilinks to other documents in your vault.

You never have to count pipe characters or manually reformat column widths. You type your content, navigate with the keyboard, and Oyma manages the structural alignment in the background.

Contextual row and column menus

Beyond keyboard navigation, Oyma equips every table with interactive drag handles and contextual action menus proven in src/renderer/editor/decorations/table-render.ts:

  • Insert left / right: Add new columns anywhere within the table structure with a single click.
  • Insert above / below: Inject rows between existing data points without reordering lines manually.
  • Delete with precision: Remove outdated metrics, columns, or empty rows instantly.
  • Column alignment toggles: Set column alignment to Left, Center, or Right. In the raw Markdown file on disk, Oyma writes the correct delimiter markers (:---, :---:, ---:) to ensure rendering parity across all Markdown engines.
  • One-click sorting: Click any column header to sort your entire table alphabetically or numerically in ascending or descending order. The underlying lines are sorted and written directly to your file.

Whether you are maintaining a software release matrix, logging budget line items, or comparing vendor quotes, table manipulation feels as natural as working in a dedicated spreadsheet application.

Intelligent tabular paste from Excel, Numbers, and CSV

Frequently, the data you need to summarize in your meeting notes or architectural specifications already exists elsewhere—in a shared Google Sheet, an Apple Numbers ledger, or a Microsoft Excel export.

Manually transcribing dozens of rows into Markdown pipes is tedious and error-prone. Oyma solves this with an intelligent clipboard normalizer implemented in src/renderer/editor/tables/tabular-paste.ts:

  1. Copy any cell range from Numbers, Excel, or Google Sheets to your system clipboard.
  2. Place your cursor inside Oyma—either within an existing table or on a blank line.
  3. Press ⌘V (Paste).
  4. Oyma analyzes the clipboard MIME types. Detecting TSV (tab-separated values) or CSV data, it converts the clipboard payload into a perfectly formed GitHub Flavored Markdown table structure in milliseconds.

If you paste over an existing selection within a table, Oyma intelligently merges the pasted cells into the matching coordinate grid rather than duplicating the entire table layout.

Uncompromised plain text storage on disk

The defining virtue of Oyma is that advanced editing capabilities never come at the expense of plain text sovereignty.

When you inspect a note containing tables in a terminal, in Finder, or inside Obsidian, you will find clean, readable, standardized Markdown:

| Deliverable | Owner | Target Date | Status |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Audio capture pipeline | Sarah Chen | 2026-10-15 | In Progress |
| Whisper model packaging | Alex Rivera | 2026-10-22 | Verified |
| Keychain integration | Maya Lin | 2026-10-29 | Planned |

There are no hidden binary markers, no custom XML wrappers, and no proprietary database schemas. Your tables remain readable across any software capable of opening a text file, ensuring your documentation remains accessible decades into the future.

Seamless integration with meeting records and summaries

Tables are an essential component of professional meeting documentation. When you record a discussion using our zero-bot meeting recording and synthesize outcomes using local AI with Ollama, Oyma formats action matrices, attendee rosters, and decision logs as clean Markdown tables.

With the live-preview Markdown editor, you can immediately tweak owners, sort deadline dates, or add supplementary notes without ever leaving your writing flow.

Experience frictionless table editing designed for serious writers and technical professionals in Oyma.

How are tables stored on disk when edited in Oyma?

Tables are saved as standard GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) pipe-delimited text files. You can open and read them in any plain text editor.

Can I paste clipboard data copied from Apple Numbers or Microsoft Excel?

Yes. Oyma automatically detects tab-separated or comma-separated clipboard data and converts it into a formatted Markdown table structure instantly.

How do I add or delete rows and columns?

You can use intuitive keyboard shortcuts (like Tab on the last cell to create a new row) or click the contextual row and column handle menus to insert, delete, or rearrange.

Does sorting a column modify the underlying plain text file?

Yes. When you sort a table by a column header, Oyma reorders the underlying Markdown lines on disk to reflect the sorted order permanently.
