Wikilinks & backlinks

Effortless bidirectional linking for connected knowledge.

Shipped in Mac AppProven in codebase: decorations/wikilink-format.ts, autocomplete/wikilink-completion.ts, wikilink-rewrite.ts (as of 2026-10-03)Note#Heading autocompletes but command-click navigation directly to heading targets is planned

What this helps you achieve

 • Instant non-linear connections across meeting records and notes
 • Automatic link refactoring when notes or titles are renamed
 • Standard WikiLink syntax fully compatible with Obsidian vaults

Human memory operates through dense webs of association rather than rigid, hierarchical folder trees. When you prepare for a meeting, conduct user research, or outline a strategic initiative, your thoughts naturally intersect with prior decisions, customer profiles, and technical specifications.

Traditional word processors and folder-based note apps force dynamic ideas into static silos. When a document can only exist in one folder, you are forced to make premature categorization choices that deteriorate over time.

Oyma solves this fragmentation with first-class support for wikilinks and bidirectional backlinks. By integrating fluid, non-destructive cross-referencing directly into your plain text files, Oyma turns an ordinary folder of Markdown notes into a durable, interconnected knowledge graph.

Instead of wrestling with tedious clipboard URLs or navigating complex file picker dialogs, linking two documents in Oyma requires only a few keystrokes.

Type two opening square brackets [[ anywhere in your text. Immediately, an intelligent autocomplete overlay appears, presenting matching document titles from across your entire vault. As you type, fuzzy search filtering narrows down candidate notes instantaneously. Pressing Return completes the link:

In the live-preview Markdown editor, the syntax conceals automatically, rendering a clean, clickable token styled with subtle typography. Clicking the token navigates directly to the referenced note, creating a frictionless workflow for deep research and project management.

Piped aliases for natural prose

Sentences should read smoothly without awkward grammatical contortions forced by document titles. Oyma fully supports piped aliases using the standard Display Text format:

The architectural guidance originated during our Monday design sync.

In the editor, the raw brackets and pipe delimiter hide from view, presenting only the natural prose “Monday design sync” while preserving the exact underlying reference on disk.

Autocompleting deep section anchors

When referencing long-form reference documents or comprehensive meeting records, linking to the top of a document is often insufficient. Oyma supports heading-level targeting:

For network timeout configurations, refer to Production Runbook#Service Retry Policies.

Typing # after a note title immediately queries that document’s outline, letting you select the exact heading anchor you need. While heading autocomplete is fully functional, direct click-through navigation to deep anchor scroll offsets is currently in progress.

The primary risk of building a large, hyperlinked knowledge repository is link rot. In primitive file-based text editors, changing the filename of a foundational document breaks dozens of incoming references, leaving behind dead links and orphaned pages.

Oyma eliminates this vulnerability with an automated vault rewrite engine proven in src/renderer/editor/wikilink-rewrite.ts:

 1. Filesystem event detection: When you rename a file—whether from the sidebar, the title bar, or via the command palette—Oyma intercepts the renaming operation before it completes.
 2. Vault-wide reference scanning: The application scans all Markdown documents in your active vault for incoming references matching the old title and its aliases.
 3. Safe atomic batch replacement: Every matching instance is updated atomically on disk, preserving formatting, whitespace, and custom aliases.
 4. Immediate disk synchronization: The modified files are flushed to disk cleanly, ensuring that if you inspect your folder in Finder or terminal, all references reflect the updated filename.

You can freely iterate on note naming conventions, rebrand projects, or reorganize folder hierarchies without fearing broken connections.

A link in Oyma is never a one-way street. When note A links to note B, note B automatically knows that note A has referenced it.

The built-in Backlinks inspector panel sits quietly in the workspace sidebar, giving you immediate visibility into every incoming connection for the active document:

 • Explicit linked references: Displays every document that contains an explicit WikiLink pointing to the current note, complete with surrounding sentence context so you understand why the link was created.
 • Unlinked mentions: Automatically scans your vault for occurrences of the current note’s title that have not yet been turned into wikilinks. With a single click, you can promote an unlinked mention into a live wikilink, establishing a permanent association.
 • Meeting lineage: If a project note was discussed across multiple recorded calls, the backlinks panel provides an immediate chronological timeline of every meeting record that referenced that initiative.

This bidirectional visibility turns every document into a natural hub. You do not need to manually curate indexes or maintain master tables of contents; your notes organize themselves through the natural act of writing.

Portability across Obsidian and the wider Markdown ecosystem

Many proprietary tools invent non-standard database hyperlinking mechanisms that trap your data within their ecosystem. If you export your workspace, their hyperlinks transform into useless internal identifiers like app://doc/3f89a2bc.

In Oyma, every wikilink is stored as literal UTF-8 plain text using the open standard adopted by the wider personal knowledge management (PKM) community. If you open your notes folder in Obsidian, Logseq, or a plain command-line editor like Neovim, your wikilinks remain fully legible and completely functional.

You can audit your vault’s link health anytime using our free browser-based Vault Health Inspector to ensure zero orphaned files or ambiguous references exist across your folders.

Whether you are connecting raw interview transcripts captured via zero-bot meeting recording or synthesizing technical specifications with local AI, wikilinks provide the structural backbone for durable personal knowledge.

Does Oyma support custom display text or aliases for wikilinks?

Yes. Using standard double-bracket piped syntax like Custom Alias, Oyma renders the custom alias smoothly while linking to the canonical note file.

What happens to existing wikilinks if I rename a note in my vault?

Oyma detects note renames across the filesystem and automatically rewrites references throughout your entire vault so your interconnected links never break.

Can I link directly to specific section headings within another document?

Yes. Typing [[Note# will invoke heading autocomplete across the target document. Note that clicking through directly to deep heading anchors is actively planned.

Are wikilinks created in Oyma portable to other Markdown applications?

Yes. Because they are saved as standard plain text brackets without proprietary database IDs, your wikilinks open and resolve natively in Obsidian and other tools.

Your notes, in plain Markdown.
