Tabular data is vital for engineering specifications, product comparisons, pricing tiers, financial summaries, and meeting action logs.

While the original 2004 Markdown specification omitted tables, GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) standardized pipe tables, which have since become the universal standard supported by Obsidian, Oyma, static site generators, and documentation platforms.

Standard GFM pipe table syntax

A Markdown table consists of a header row, a delimiter row, and any number of data rows, with columns separated by vertical pipe characters (|):

| Deliverable | Owner | Deadline | Status |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Core Audio Capture | Alex Rivera | 2026-10-15 | In Progress |
| Whisper VAD Tuning | Jordan Lee | 2026-10-22 | Backlog |
| Gate 13 Shingle Check | Taylor Kim | 2026-10-10 | Complete |

Anatomy of a pipe table

  1. Header row: The first row contains the column titles.
  2. Delimiter row: The second row consists of hyphens (---) separating the headers from the body cells. This row is required; without it, the text is rendered as plain paragraphs.
  3. Data rows: Subsequent rows provide cell contents.
  4. Outer pipes: Pipes at the start and end of rows are technically optional in GFM, but including them ensures consistent parsing and neat alignment across all text editors.

Controlling column text alignment

You can configure column alignment (left, center, or right) by placing colons (:) within the delimiter row hyphens:

| Left-aligned (Default) | Center-aligned | Right-aligned (Numbers) |
| :--- | :---: | ---: |
| Text aligns left | Text centered | $1,240.00 |
| CommonMark prose | Neutral indicator | 42 units |
| Project brief | Verified status | 99.8% |
  • :---: Left-aligned (standard for prose, titles, and descriptions).
  • :---:: Centered (ideal for status badges, icons, short codes, and dates).
  • ---:: Right-aligned (standard for monetary figures, percentages, and numeric quantities).

Formatting within table cells

Table cells support most inline Markdown formatting elements:

| Element | Syntax Example | Rendered Effect |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Bold text** | `**Critical**` | **Critical** |
| *Italics* | `*Emphasis*` | *Emphasis* |
| Strikethrough | `~~Deprecated~~` | ~~Deprecated~~ |
| Inline code | `` `npm install` `` | `npm install` |
| Hyperlinks | `[Oyma](https://www.getoyma.com)` | [Oyma](https://www.getoyma.com) |
| [[WikiLinks]] | `[[Product Roadmap]]` | Bidirectional vault link |
| Line break | `Line 1<br>Line 2` | Multi-line text within cell |

Escaping literal pipes inside cells

To display a literal pipe character (|) inside a table cell without splitting the column, escape it with a backslash (\|) or wrap it in backticks (`|`):

| Command | Purpose |
| :--- | :--- |
| `grep \| wc -l` | Count matching lines in file |
| `a \|\| b` | Logical OR operation in JavaScript |

Advanced table capabilities in Oyma

Writing and aligning raw ASCII pipe tables manually in plain-text editors can be tedious. Oyma transforms Markdown tables into a modern, fluid spreadsheet experience:

  1. Keyboard navigation: Press Tab to navigate to the next cell. Press Shift+Tab to go back. Press Enter to jump to the next row.
  2. Spreadsheet clipboard integration: Copy cells from Apple Numbers, Microsoft Excel, or Google Sheets and press ⌘V in Oyma; the data pastes instantly as formatted Markdown tables.
  3. Column sorting: Click column headers to sort rows alphabetically or numerically.
  4. Column manipulation: Insert, delete, or rearrange columns and rows via visual contextual menus.
  5. Pure disk integrity: Every edit is saved directly as clean, portable GFM pipe Markdown on your Mac’s filesystem.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard syntax for creating a table in Markdown?
Markdown tables use vertical pipes (`|`) to separate columns and hyphens (`-`) to create the header divider row (`| Header 1 | Header 2 | | --- | --- | | Cell 1 | Cell 2 |`). Outer pipes are optional in GFM, but using them is recommended for raw text clarity.
How do I align table columns (left, center, right) in Markdown?
Column alignment is defined using colons (`:`) in the delimiter row: `:---` for left-aligned, `:---:` for centered, and `---:` for right-aligned.
Can I use line breaks, lists, or multiple paragraphs inside a table cell?
Standard Markdown pipe tables do not support multi-line paragraphs or standard bullet lists. However, you can use the HTML `
` tag to create inline line breaks inside a cell.
How does Oyma's spreadsheet table editor work?
Oyma provides a rich, spreadsheet-like table interface with Tab and Enter cell navigation, column sorting, row reordering, and direct copy-pasting to and from Apple Numbers or Microsoft Excel, all saved cleanly as standard GFM pipe tables on disk.
