Hyperlinks are the fabric of the web and the foundation of interconnected knowledge. In Markdown, linking allows connecting ideas across external websites, referencing internal files, citing academic sources, and building web documentation.

CommonMark provides three distinct linking patterns: inline links, reference-style links, and autolinks. In Oyma, these standard web links coexist seamlessly alongside bidirectional [[WikiLinks]].

The inline link is the standard way to create hyperlinks in Markdown. Enclose the anchor text in square brackets ([...]), followed immediately by the target URL inside parentheses ((...)):

You can specify an optional hover tooltip by placing a title string in quotation marks after the URL, separated by a space:

Download [Oyma](https://www.getoyma.com "Private Markdown notes for Mac").

When rendered to HTML, this produces <a href="https://www.getoyma.com" title="Private Markdown notes for Mac">Oyma</a>.

When writing long paragraphs containing multiple complex URLs, inline links can make raw Markdown difficult to read. Reference-style links separate the anchor text from the destination URL:

Oyma provides [sovereign local notes][1], [botless meeting capture][2],
and [on-device transcription][3] on Apple Silicon.

Named references

Instead of numeric indexes, you can use descriptive identifiers:

Reference link definitions can be placed anywhere in the document—typically at the very bottom. They do not render visibly in the output.

To make a bare URL or email address clickable without defining custom anchor text, wrap it in angle brackets (<...>):

In GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) and Oyma, bare URLs (e.g., https://www.getoyma.com) are automatically detected and converted into clickable links even without angle brackets.

You can link to other local Markdown files or media assets using standard relative file paths:

While standard Markdown links are ideal for web URLs and external documentation, internal note linking in Oyma is typically faster using bidirectional [[WikiLinks]]:

FeatureStandard Markdown LinkBidirectional [[WikiLink]]
Syntax[Title](path/note.md)[[Note Title]] or `[[Target
TargetWeb URLs & file pathsVault notes, headings, and blocks
File extensionRequired for local files (.md)Omitted (automatically resolved)
Rename resilienceLinks break if destination movesAutomatically rewritten on note rename
Backlinks trackingNot trackedAutomatically populated in backlinks inspector

Both formats work interchangeably in Oyma. You can write standard [links](url) for external research and [[WikiLinks]] for your internal knowledge graph.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between inline links and reference links?
Inline links place the destination URL directly after the anchor text inside parentheses (`[text](url)`). Reference-style links keep the URL at the bottom of the document using an ID tag (`[text][id]`), keeping the paragraph text cleaner and easier to read in raw plain text.
How do I add a tooltip (title attribute) to a Markdown link?
Add the tooltip text in quotes inside the parentheses following the URL: `[Oyma](https://www.getoyma.com "Private Mac Notes")`. When readers hover over the link in a browser, the tooltip text displays.
What are autolinks in Markdown?
Autolinks allow writing bare URLs wrapped in angle brackets (``). CommonMark automatically converts them into clickable hyperlinks with the URL as both text and destination.
How do standard Markdown links differ from [[WikiLinks]] in Oyma?
Standard Markdown links connect to external web URLs or relative file paths (`[Doc](guide.md)`). Bidirectional `[[WikiLinks]]` (`[[Project Plan]]`) link notes across your vault without needing file extensions, automatically resolving renames and backlinks.
