New paragraph separated by blank line

One of the most frequent surprises for newcomers to Markdown is how line breaks and paragraph spacing operate.

In word processors like Microsoft Word or Google Docs, pressing Return immediately creates a new line. In standard CommonMark, however, pressing Return once simply wraps text onto the same line, while pressing Return twice creates a new paragraph.

Understanding the difference between soft breaks, hard breaks, and paragraph breaks is essential for formatting addresses, poetry, legal clauses, and multi-line dialogue cleanly.

Paragraph breaks (Blank lines)

In Markdown, paragraphs are separated by one or more blank lines:

This is the first paragraph discussing system architecture.

This is the second paragraph elaborating on local data storage.

When rendered, this compiles to two distinct HTML <p> elements: <p>First paragraph...</p><p>Second paragraph...</p>, separated by comfortable vertical paragraph margins.

Soft breaks (Single return)

If you type a single return between lines without an empty blank line:

Roses are red,
Violets are blue.

In standard CommonMark, this renders as a single continuous line: Roses are red, Violets are blue.

Why Markdown uses soft line breaks

Soft line breaks were intentional. In the early days of computing, authors formatted plain text files with 80-character column wraps. Soft line breaks allow source files to wrap cleanly on terminal screens without injecting unwanted line breaks into rendered web pages.

Creating hard line breaks (<br>)

When you specifically need a new line without creating a new paragraph—such as in street addresses, song lyrics, or haikus—CommonMark provides two standardized methods:

Method 1: Two trailing spaces (Classic syntax)

End the line with two or more spaces, then press Return:

123 Sovereign Street··
Suite 400··
San Francisco, CA 94105

(Dots ·· indicate trailing space characters).

In the rendered view, each line ends with a <br> tag: 123 Sovereign Street
Suite 400
San Francisco, CA 94105

Because trailing whitespace is invisible and often stripped by code formatters or text editors, CommonMark standardized the trailing backslash (\):

123 Sovereign Street\
Suite 400\
San Francisco, CA 94105

Ending a line with \ followed immediately by a return compiles to an identical <br> element. The backslash is visible in plain text, making it significantly easier to maintain.

Method 3: HTML <br> tag

You can also insert the HTML <br> tag directly into your text:

First line<br>Second line directly beneath.

This is particularly useful inside Markdown table cells where pressing Return is not permitted.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a hard break and a soft break in Markdown?
A soft break occurs when you press Return once; CommonMark treats soft breaks as a single space within the same paragraph. A hard break forces a new line (`
`) within the same paragraph without creating an empty paragraph gap.
How do I create a hard line break in CommonMark?
End the line with two or more spaces, or end the line with a trailing backslash (`\`), then press Return. Both compile to the HTML `
` line break element.
Why does pressing Enter once not create a new line in rendered Markdown?
Markdown is designed to allow arbitrary line wrapping in plain text editors without affecting rendered HTML. This prevents text from breaking awkwardly on different device screen sizes.
How does Oyma handle line breaks in live preview?
Oyma formats standard paragraphs with comfortable reading margins and renders hard breaks precisely where designated, offering an option to treat single returns as hard breaks.
