Cleaning the friction out of Notion Markdown exports

Notion is a powerful relational database tool, but when teams and individuals attempt to migrate their knowledge bases out of Notion and into standard Markdown vaults, they encounter an immediate structural obstacle: Notion appends a 32-character hexadecimal UUID hash to every single exported file name, document heading, and relative internal link. For example, a note titled Sprint Planning exports as Sprint Planning 4d8b9e83a71b4a9db943c2084c8a5c4e.md.

Furthermore, internal links between documents export with URL percent-encoded strings like [Architecture](Architecture%204d8b9e83a71b4a9db943c2084c8a5c4e.md). When imported into Obsidian or standard local Markdown viewers, these links break the visual flow of prose and prevent native bidirectional link indexing from connecting related concepts. Our browser-based fixer cleans these ugly hash strings and converts links into clean [[WikiLinks]].

Algorithmic link repair and callout modernization

Our parser inspects the document structure and automatically executes four essential transformations:

  • Heading hash removal: Detects and removes trailing 32-character hex UUID strings from H1 document titles and subheadings, restoring clean typographical titles.
  • Wikilink reconstruction: Identifies relative Markdown file links, decodes URL escape sequences, strips internal hashes, and wraps the target in native Obsidian [[WikiLink]] brackets.
  • Attachment path normalization: Converts messy attachment links like ![Diagram](attachments/diagram%204d8b.png) into clean Obsidian-compatible embeds: ![[diagram.png]].
  • Callout format translation: Translates Notion-style emoji blockquotes into standard modern callouts (> [!note] and > [!warning]) that render with beautiful styling across desktop editors.

Zero cloud dependencies for confidential workspace data

Your Notion workspace contains proprietary business strategies, engineering roadmaps, customer research, and private executive meeting records. Passing those files through unverified cloud conversion services risks severe data exposure. This tool processes your Markdown completely inside your local browser tab using zero external network connections.

In Oyma, your notes are stored as plain Markdown files on your own Mac filesystem. We never lock your thoughts behind proprietary database block structures or cloud subscriptions. Read our detailed Notion to Markdown migration guide and explore our Oyma vs Notion breakdown.

Frequently asked questions

Questions

Why does Notion append 32-character hex hashes to every exported file and link?

Notion represents all documents and database rows internally as UUID records in a cloud database. When exporting to Markdown, it appends the 32-character UUID hash to file titles and link destinations to ensure uniqueness across pages with identical titles.

How does this tool repair broken links between exported Notion notes?

The engine detects relative links containing encoded filenames and hex hashes (such as [Roadmap](Roadmap%204d8b...md)), strips the 32-character hash, removes URL percent encodings, and rewrites the link into a clean bidirectional [[Roadmap]] wikilink.

What happens to Notion emoji callout blocks?

Notion exports callouts as blockquotes prefixed with emoji icons like 💡 or ⚠️. Our converter identifies these emoji markers and upgrades them into standard Obsidian callouts (> [!note] and > [!warning]).

Does this tool upload my exported workspace notes to remote servers?

No. The entire hash stripping and regex link repair logic executes locally within your browser tab. No confidential workspace data is transmitted over the internet.

How does the desktop app compare to Notion?

The desktop app stores your notes as plain Markdown files directly on your local Mac disk, completely free from proprietary database IDs, cloud vendor lock-in, and monthly per-seat AI transcription fees.
